Baymard’s Food Delivery UX research is based on more than 90 qualitative participant/site usability test sessions following the “Think Aloud” protocol. During testing, the users encountered 600+ medium-to-severe usability issues on the food delivery and takeout mobile apps and websites while locating the menu options, deciding on what food to order, customizing the food, and placing an order for delivery or pickup. It’s these issues that have been analyzed and distilled into 320+ UX guidelines relevant for food delivery and takeout apps and sites.

Test Methodology

This UX research on food delivery mobile apps and websites is part of Baymard Institute’s full 150,000+ hours of large scale research catalog, which is based on:

  • Usability Testing: 25 rounds of qualitative usability testing with 4,400+ test participant/site sessions following the “Think Aloud” protocol (mainly in-person 1:1 moderated lab usability testing). This includes testing Restaurant-to-Consumer sites such as Starbucks, Chipotle, Domino’s, and Panera Bread, and testing Platform-to-Consumer sites such as Doordash and Uber Eats.
  • Manual benchmarking: 54 rounds of benchmarking the world’s 251 top-grossing e-commerce sites across 650+ UX guidelines (175,000+ implementation examples and 275,000+ UX performance scores). This includes UX benchmarking of food delivery and takeout mobile apps and mobile websites from DoorDash, KFC, Burger King, McDonald’s, Domino’s, Uber Eats, Just Eat, and Deliveroo.
  • In-lab eye-tracking testing.
  • Quantitative studies: 12 studies with a total of 20,240 participants.
